A complete, fully documented tandem electrostatic accelerator originally installed at Arizona State University's IBeAM facility. Three beamlines, two ion sources, H through Au.
Manufactured by General Ionex (now HVEE — High Voltage Engineering Europa), this Tandetron was disassembled from operational state with full preservation of components, connections, and configurations.
The Cockroft-Walton 1.7 MV multiplier was recently serviced and the RF driver oscillators upgraded. Beam currents range from femtoamps (He) to over 400 nA (Cu), with a demonstrated stable terminal voltage of 2 MV.
Two ion sources — an NEC Alphatross for RF charge exchange and a General Ionex cesium sputter source — cover light gas species through heavy metals. Complete lifetime logs, original engineering documentation, and direct contact with both former operators are maintained.
Elemental depth profiling and thin-film composition analysis.
Trace element analysis with ppm-level sensitivity across the periodic table.
Focused beam analysis with multi-axis sample manipulation for spatially resolved measurements.
G&E Tandems was founded around a single audacious acquisition: when Arizona State University's IBeAM facility went up for auction, we staked everything we had on the bet that we understood the system well enough to extract it intact.
Over three week-long trips to Arizona, we personally documented and disassembled every component of a working 1.7MV Tandetron still at high vacuum, including a 16-hour continuous extraction of the 14-foot irradiated glass accelerating column. We then managed crews to crate every component and boom-crane the 5-ton SF₆ pressure vessel out of a basement lab. We managed rigging crews, engineered custom extraction jigs when no existing procedure worked, and completed the operation on time and on budget without breaking a component.
What this means for you: every component in this system has passed through our hands. We know how it fits together, what its quirks are, and what it takes to recommission it. We offer the system as a whole, as subsystems, or as individual parts — and we back it with installation and consulting support grounded in direct hands-on knowledge.
